This time, we would like to tell you about a great opportunity to relax: by taking a walk in the ELTE Botanical Garden - in the Füvészkert. The garden provides a peaceful walk and a beautiful visual experience for visitors. If you are curious about the details, do not hesitate to continue reading!

Füvészkert, the first botanical garden in Hungary, was established in 1771 by Jakab Winterl, professor of chemistry and botany. From its inception, these gardens have helped doctors and pharmacists study and the research the regional flora and fauna of Hungary, whilst acting as an important nature conservation area for preservation. Moreover, Füvészkert also takes part in the artificial propagation of endangered, protected plants. The Garden preserves and introduces 85 domestic, and 250 internationally endangered species.

The garden contains a variety of tropical and subtropical plants for visitors to enjoy. For a truly special experience, come to the palm house, where you can admire beautiful plants with large leaves such as coconut palm, banana tree, cocoa tree or olive tree. The palm house was built in 1864-65, and is considered to be one of the largest in Europe.

In the Victoria House, you can find another one of the garden’s hidden treasures, the Amazon Waterlily. It is a stunning plant to behold, with huge leaves that can hold up to 50 kilograms. The flower of this tropical plant blossoms twice, on two separate evenings. The first night the flower is snow white with a pineapple scent, and the second night it turns pink after opening. Each year, the botanical garden hosts a Victoria Bloom, where visitors can not only take in the flowering of the plant, but also conduct a leaf test when young children can sit on a Victoria leaf to see how much the leaf can hold, whilst having the opportunity to set an annual record.

Another interesting part of the garden is the collection of orchids and the hundreds of species of cacti, so we encourage you to visit them as well.

The ELTE Botanical Garden is located in a well frequented area of the city, therefore it is easily accessible on the M3 subway, and there are both adult and student tickets available for purchase.

Whether you are a nature enthusiast or not, Füvészkert is a beautiful gem which will live long in your memory of Budapest.
